No Surprises Act
You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate that explains how much your care may cost. Under federal law, providers must give an upfront estimate to people who don’t have certain types of health coverage or who choose not to use their coverage for a particular service.
You can request a Good Faith Estimate at any time—whether you’re scheduling care or simply exploring your options. The estimate should include the total expected costs for services, along with any related fees such as tests, medications, equipment, or facility charges.
If you schedule a service at least 3 business days in advance, your provider or facility must give you the estimate within 1 business day. If you schedule at least 10 business days ahead, they must provide it within 3 business days. You can also ask for an estimate before scheduling, and it must be provided within 3 business days of your request.
If you receive a bill that is $400 or more above the Good Faith Estimate from that same provider or facility, you have the right to dispute the bill.
For your records, make sure to keep a copy or photo of your Good Faith Estimate.
